sewing

Ivy Smock

I have really been hanging out to do some sewing.  It's been a while since I pulled old Bertha (overlocker) out and gave her a serious whirl and I really wanted to do something, anything.  The problem with sewing at my place is that I don't have any dedicated space.  The only place where there is room to sew is on the kitchen table.  Every time I pull Bertha (and her sister Betty) out, I end up rushing what I do because I just want to get it finished rather than having to go through packing it all up and unpacking it all again.

Any hoo, yesterday I made this.  It's a smock-like dress for Ivy. (please excuse the poor photography) It's made out of a lacy style stretch fabric which I picked up on a GJ's fabric remnant table months ago.  I didn't use a pattern and just cut straight into the fabric. I know I was risking project suicide but I had that 'need to get finished' monkey on my back and in the end I didn't fair too badly.

It was really easy to make with joins at the shoulders, the sides and the sleeves.  I then added a crocheted doily which I made last week as a practice run for the jug cover I finished on Saturday.  I thought the blue was a good match for the pinky orange.  I also added a matching crochet chain for the drawstring around the neck.  I am crossing my fingers Ivy will wear it but if she doesn't then it's plan B - a top for Tallulah.  It's quite wide so should fit her across the torso easily but I'll need to make wider armholes and sleeves.

It's by no means a perfect project, nor one of my best but did satisfy some of my desire to sew.  I really love the colour and the look of it and therefore deemed it post worthy. =)
