sharing...

It's time to share the love my friends. I have finally written up the pattern for what I now call the Ivyberry hat.

ivyberry hat

This is the first time I have created a pattern to share and I'm so happy to be able to do so. All I ask from you is that you link back here if you decide to make it and blog about it and that you let me know if there are any errors and problems you encounter along the way... I have also included links to JPEG's of the pattern at the bottom incase you are like me and like to read off paper.

To make I used:

4 mm crochet hook
Lincraft double knitting variegated yarn 100g (very cheap not too nasty 100% acrylic)

to begin...smile, relax and make yourself comfortable with a nice cup of tea and dipping biscuit nearby. Pick up your hook and yarn and get ready.

Row 1) Chain 4 and slip stitch into the last chain to form a ring. Chain 3, 1 treble (tr) into the centre of the ring. Repeat a further 10 times. Slip Stitch (sl st) into the 3rd chain (top)  with a slip stitch (sl st).

Row 2) Chain 3. 2tr into top of first treble of of previous row. *2tr in next stitch. Repeat * all around. Join to top of chain with sl st.

Row 3) Chain 3. *2tr in first stitch, 1tr in next stitch. Repeat*. Join to top of chain with sl st.

Row 4) Chain 3. *2tr in first stitch, 1tr in each of next 2 stitches. Repeat*. Join to top of chain with sl st.

(take a sip of tea and dip your biscuit. mmm)

Row 5) Chain 3. *2tr in first stitch, 1tr in each of next 3 stitches. Repeat*. Join to top of chain with sl st.

Row 6) Chain 3. *2tr in first stitch, 1tr in each of next 4 stitches. Repeat*. Join to top of chain with sl st.

Row 7) Chain 3. *2tr in first stitch, 1tr in each of next 5 stitches. Repeat*. Join to top of chain with sl st.

It’s at this point you will need to measure the head you are making the hat for. My daughter is petite and this was enough width for her head. She is almost 3 but I’d say she has the head size of an average 18month - 2 yo. If you require more width, then repeat the pattern for each extra row as per above instructions adding an extra single treble to the bunch. (i.e Row 8 2tr in first stitch, 1tr in each of next 6 (row nine becomes 7 etc) stitches) I wouldn’t go any higher than 10tr in between. If you are making this for an older child or an adult then repeat 10tr until you reach the desired width.

Of course if you want to make this hat for a smaller head, then you may need to finish at an earlier row to begin the sides.

Row 8 - 21) Chain 3. 1tr in each stitch all the way around. Join to top of chain with sl st.

Again you will need to measure at this point too. You may need to add extra rows or less rows depending on the size of the head the hat is for. Wouldn’t want those ears to get cold!

Scalloped edge

Up until now I’ve managed to partially suppress parts of my poisonality. I’ve been polite and I’ve refrained from swearing. I have enjoyed this clean crisp illusion I’ve created around myself but today is the day I burst that bubble. Please don’t be disappointed. The reality is I’ve completely ‘arsed’ the scalloped edge. I knew what I wanted to do and so I decided to give it a go on my own. My scallop is unorthodox but it worked for me and saved me so much time. I was sick, the couch was comfortable and the lounge-room cosy and warm. If you are a crochet purist then I’d strongly advise you turn away now.

Continuing on from previous row, chain 3.

*7tr in same stitch as base of chain (sl st). Join final treble in 3rd stitch along with a sl st. Sl st into next stitch. Chain 3. Repeat from * all around edge of hat. Join with sl st. Finish.

Flower pattern - I haven't included a flower pattern as I figured there are so many to choose from on the web and other blogs (Try Attic24 here and here, or Rosehip) but please let me know if you would like me to include the flower pattern too. I'm happy to give it a go.

Ok. Firstly you are so generous to share this. Secondly, as a crap knitter and an even worse crochet person (?) the pattern scares the bejesus outta me! I can't imagine even being able to write that Mel! Soooo I am giving it to my mum who loves and is good at both wooly crafts. She'll love it ... I hope, because that hat is just too lovely for words!

Oh isn't Sienna the sweetest?  I hope you take out the line where I say I 'arsed' it before you give it to your mum!!

It's not a hard pattern at all.  Very quick and simple.  Crossing my fingers that my  translation works for you!

Phew!  Thank goodness!  I like the term 'winging' it.  Goes to show how much classier you are!

Looks ace! I'm going to have to have a go at that one. Thank you so much for the pattern. Have a great weekend.

No worries Kate.  Let me know how it goes ok?  I have never followed a pattern from beginning to end so I don't know what the crochet rules are as such.  I have improvised but are worried it won't translate.
