Granny of the week

Hello!  A belated Granny of the Week post.  I was meant to post this on Sunday but for one reason or ten I ended up just not doing it.  So here it is mainly because I want to stick to doing this so I finish the blanket and to let you know that I haven't fallen off planet Starr.

Granny of the week

Squares completed this week: 1 - yeah I know, pretty slack. I was busy with the flower cushion which I'm actually still busy with.  It's being very naughty (actually being a right pain in the proverbial)  so I'm giving it a little bit of a break while I work on my giveaway (ooooo) - more on that tomorrow.

Granny count: 97/256

Favourite square:  The upside to only completing one square is that it's easy to choose my favourite.  The downside is it also doubles as my least favourite.  Meh.  You win some you lose some.

granny of the week

Granny of the week

Squares completed this week: 13
Granny count:  91/256
Favourite square:  couldn't choose one this week.  I made a few tonal squares which I loved equally and  I've featured them above. It's a pity the colours weren't picked up by my camera.  The pink squares on either end are really vibrant and contain a 'suck your eyes out' pink as Tania might put it.

An added bonus was that I found 3 extra squares I'd made down at the beach house a couple of weeks ago.  I'd somehow missed them when I took them out of my wool bag.  Very happy with that score.

That's all for today off to finish/start a sewing project.  ciao!

granny of the week

granny of the week 5/10/09

In order to keep my 'background' project in the background and not have it end up in a bag amongst my other crafty bits and pieces I have decided to post a regular update to ensure I keep it on the agenda. Somehow (it's the illogical madness of the way my mind works) I know that by committing to posting about the blanket I will actually get it finished.

Unlike this first post it will be a simple update post every Sunday.  I'll choose my favourite square of the week, let you know how many more I have to go and any other news worth telling.  Like I said, it's my way of committing to the project and a good way of keeping check of where I'm at.  So here goes my first try...

Granny count: 75/256.
Featured favourite square:  I don't know what it is about this square.  The colours make me think of cupcakes and pastel spring bouquets, in particular sweetpeas and their lovely soft fragrance.  I'd never think to make anything in these colours unless I was making it for a little girl and maybe that's why I fell in love with this square.   Perhaps it reminds me of my childhood and my love for things sweet and delicate?

Yes now I know I had originally decided I was going to make a blanket that was 625 squares across (25 squares x 25 squares).  It was a bit overwhelming to think about but I was prepared to do it if that's what I had to do.  When testing the layout last week, I laid out my squares across the large rug in my loungeroom and to my surprise the rug was approximately 20 granny squares across.  This got me thinking.  I have been scouting the internet looking at different styles of blankets and was growing quite keen on the idea of joining the squares with a strip of colour in between.  This would mean that I wouldn't need to make as many squares as I had originally thought and I like the way a background colour makes the individual squares stand out.

Soooo I have decided I am now going to make the blanket 16 x 16 squares across which is a grand total of 256 squares.  A rather significant reduction don't you think??  It completely changes the scope of the project and all I can say is 'he he he I'm cruising now baby'.  I am aware that joining the squares still means there is a lot of work to do but not changing colours every row will make this task a lot easier.  It's all very, very exciting.  = D

our granny cate...

17 Sept 09

A friend of mine works at ACMI and sent me this photo of Cate Blanchett at the opening of the Screen Worlds exhibition this morning.  Would you look at what she's wearing?  Yep it's a granny square blanket dress.  How cool is that?  Go Cate!
