silver smithing course part II

I know I said I'd post the results of the course yesterday but I've been invaded by a lurgy and it's eaten away all desire to sit in front of the computer.

That being said I am sitting here now, albeit briefly, with the intention of posting about my new ring in between coughing fits and wiffs of eucalypt from the good 'ole vicks.

The course I attended was at a place called Made in Malmsbury in the town of Malmsbury which is about an hour and bit drive north of Melbourne. Frances, the teacher and owner of Made in Malmsbury, holds silver and goldsmithing courses there for those wanting to learn about jewellery making and also holds wedding ring courses for couples who'd like to make their own rings. I wish I'd known about it before I'd have gotten married!! The course ran for about 5 hours and there were five of us in the class so it was a good size and a great day.

Ta da! As you know I went to the course having really no idea of what style of ring I wanted to make so the ring and final design was an ongoing process throughout the day. I literally kept adding bits and changing bits as I learnt what I could and couldn't do within the time frame I had.

Am I happy with what I made? Yes, it's wearable, I quite like it and I now know what I would like to make next time. It's definitely inspired me to do more! Silver smithing isn't difficult as such but it would take a fair bit of practice learning to saw metals straight, file edges evenly and get that finished professional look into each thing you made. It's lucky I like the wonky, naive style that I produced!!!

But it was such a fun day, I absolutely loved doing it and I can't wait to have a second turn at it. I would really love to plan for a girls day out and go out to Malmsbury to spend the day making stuff together. It would be so much fun!

Must take a break now...cough splutter cough splutter...hopefully back soon!!

silver smithing course...

Tomorrow I am going off to do a silver smithing course with some friends and I want to make a ring. Have been browsing Etsy for some simple ideas...

Rings

Middle Left: Silver Cracks Ring
Middle Right: Brass Bird Ring
Bottom Left: Slender Water Ring

I don't know what the course will entail in the sense of what skills I will be learning and using etc... so it's hard to bed down any real ideas. But I thought I better do some research just incase. Will definitely post the results on Sunday!
