During the week Dad was having one of those days when the age of three reveals itself as far worse than two (why does everyone think two is so bad?). With his sanity rapidly being sucked out by our daughter he knew he had to came up with something to make his day easier. So what did he do? He made her a fishing game, the kind that uses magnets.
I was so chuffed when I came home from work and saw what he had done. He is such a clever little bee. He made her a fishing rod out of a bit of pole, tape, string and a magnet and drew up some fish and an octupus onto some cardboard. After cutting them out the two of them sat down together and coloured them in. He then stapled each one a few times to give the magnet something to stick to and grabbed a bucket to put them in. It was brilliant and Ivy absolutely loved it.
The only problem with the game was that the cardboard he had used was a little thin and undoubtedly wouldn't last forever and this got me thinking.
In steps mum...

Yep, I couldn't help myself. Today I sat down with my felt stash and proceeded to churn out sea-life for Ivy.
Meet the fish...

I started out with the intention of hand-sewing all the creatures with a blanket stitch edge but I was in a slightly "can't be bothered" mood so I moved onto using the sewing machine for the final two fish. On reflection I should have hand-sewed the whole lot. Not only does the hand-sewing look better and make the felt sit better it's also easier sewing in the washers (metal for the magnets) on the inside seam which the sewing machine can't accommodate. It may have sewn the seams quicker but it threw up it's own problems; changing cottons, placement and sewing in of washers etc... and in the end took about the same amount of time as hand sewing.
I then started on the rest of the gang, meet starfish, jelly fish and blob of seaweed...

Ivy was particularly amused by the blob of seaweed. It's always hilarious catching something horrible, stinky and undesirable isn't it? The seawead was easy to make, just some scrap wool and green ric-rac I had lying around. The jelly fish was really easy too. A bit of felt and some ribbon for it's tentacles.
It was all quite fun to make but I wish in some ways I had been in the mood to take my time. It would have been great putting more effort into the decorating of the fish. I would have loved to have sewn on scales, sequins, stripes and made them look absolutely exquisite but I just wasn't up for it today. I wanted to finish it as quickly as I could and my desired aesthetic would mean the project may drag on for weeks. I guess I could always attempt it later, one fish at a time...hmmm, yep it's the thought that counts!!
If any of you would like a tutorial on how to make a set like this I am happy to try and muster one up. It's a great little game to make for little ones and would be a great gift idea too. The beauty of it all is that you could probably find every thing you need from around the home and if you can't, then none of the materials cost that much anyway. Let me know, I'm happy to share the love.
=D

Awwww that's so cute! It would make a perfect gift idea too.
What a fantastic team you two make! I love all the sea creatures and would LOVE to make my own set. Hope you are having an ace F's day weekend.
that's fabulous mel!! i have enough time to make a set for w for his birthday in october.....
This is lovely Mel, I am going through my felt right away!
I love it. The seaweed is my absolute favourite. You should write a tutorial for sure... oh, and please do get around to writing a post about your bread-winner-mum experiences and reflections. It's a fascinating unknown area for me and a good opportunity to understand someone else's life!
Blob of seaweed gets my favourite vote too! Now why is it always the simplest things? Gotta say, I love the machine versions too - they have a certain quirky something...
I LOVE this! great idea Dad ... and such great fish, creatures and ideas Mum! Well done all!
Thanks Kate, have started drawing up fish patterns and the like. Will get to the tutorial part in the next few days. You'll be fishing in no time.
Cool, I have drawn up the pattern pieces and will scan them tomorrow onto a PDF. Happy to send them to you from work if you like??
Oh that's so cool. Glad to be of inspiration to you! Hope you enjoy making it!
Yes, the seaweed was my fave too. The simple things are often the best. I shall write that tutorial over the next few days, time permitting. Have to finish that quilt piece!!
I'd love to sit down and write down my bread-winner mum experiences. I often read blogs and the like on parenting and motherhood and find myself left with quite a bit to say but never I have never really ended up saying it. I think I'll attempt to write it slowly so I make sure I say it right. Watch this space!
Thanks Tania. It was the blob of seaweed that inspired the starfish and the jelly fish. If I had have started with the seaweed (I started with the fish) the fish may have ended up giving the great barrier reef a run for its money.
Ahh the value of hindsight....
Thanks Tammy. It's a bit of fun and my daughter loves it so it makes it even more rewarding.
Thanks Cam. It's funny you say that. Am planning to make one for another 3 yo birthday present in a couple of weeks time!
Oh wow! I LOVE it! How fabulous is this? Brownie points to you both. I think the machine versions are just as good, Melanie - different, more edgy I think, which I really like. (And yes, 2 is nothing compared to 3, it's very true!) Great post :) K
What a great post Melanie. I loved learning a bit about you and I loved the self reflection. And of course, the fishing game is amazing. I'd love to read how you did it so I can make one too.
And how clever is 'Dad'...!
looks great! And WHY is 3 so much worse than 2!? My big guy is 3 and I don't even recognize him sometimes, haha! Maybe I need to make him some fish and see if that helps...!?
did I mention they're so awesome? Great job!
I think I'll make something similar for my daughter. She loves to pretend fish!
We're dealing with the "troublesome threes" over here and wishing things were more like the "terrible twos!"
THis is a really great idea. I've been there, making things just to get them done and feeling a little gulity I'm not putting more effort into them. In fact, I did that with the felt mail I made recently. I just didn't feel like hand sewing all the details. You have days like that, I guess. (And sometimes it's good to give myself permission to not do 100% all the time. Easier said than done.)
great post! love the fishing project and am very tempted to have a go at this too. I have a little girl turning three in seven days so this might need to jump to the top of the projects I have on the go....
It's great when dad's get the opportunity to stay at home with their children. My partner really cherishes the time he had at home with our eldest daughter.
Great post! I love your sea life and what a clever dad too!
Oh Bravo!! (Wild applause!) What a great Dad, what a great Mum.
My man was a stay home Dad for the last two months and that glazed expression is one that I know well. : )
100% pure gold.
I spend all of my days with a 2.5 year old and I'll certainly be adding this activity to my tool box. Love the idea of making felt fish sets for chrissy pressies - thanks for the inspiration.
I am however a little terrified to read that 2 is nothing compared to 3...
Thanks Kylie. Have finished your beret now, just adding some finishing touches but will hopefully have it sent by the end of the week.
Thanks Nikki. I'm more than happy to share the game so I will post the directions very soon.
And yes Dad is a very clever man. He always comes up with great ideas for the kids.
Thanks Elizabeth. Yes 3 is worse than 2. I think it's because 2 has tantrums because 2 can't talk properly or articulate their needs whereas 3 knows exactly what it wants, how to ask for it and how to get its way if told no. LOL!!
Oh yes please do!! I am posting a pattern very soon, have drawn it up. I also had a fantasy about making amigurumi sea life too. Will have to put it on my to-do list for the time being.
Thanks Gretchen. It's nice to know when you're not the only person that sometimes takes a short cut and feels guilty about it! It's awful when you know you can do better but don't!!
Please have a go and let me know! I'd love to see how it turns out. I have drawn up pattern pieces but not had the time to do the instructions. grrr. time, if only there was more of it!!
Thanks Claire!! He is a clever dad!
Hi Sally! Glad to give you some inspiration. If you do end up making I'd love to know so please make sure you take some pictures.
Oh and I'm sorry to have worried you about 3! There is a definite upside to 3. They are extremely funny at this age because it's the age where they start making curious and innocent observations about the world. The good definitely outweighs the bad even though it may not feel like it in the middle of a tantrum!!
I made some too, great fun project Melanie, thankyou! Chele x
They're great! I'm particularly encouraged by the fact that it was one day's work - I have lots of ideas but rarely implement them because I think it'll take too long. Maybe I need to re-evaluate that excuse!
This is great, I started one of these (which also includes some sushi-soy-sauce fish.....just screw the washer on with the lid) a while back but I can't find any mini magnets. Any ideas on where I can find some. A tut would be lovely as well!
