I'm nearly there, so very close to the end. I am trying not to rush things. I tend to do that when I get close to finishing things and then I stuff things up and let myself down. I had to remind myself of this when I started using the sewing machine last night. I made a stupid mistake but luckily I realised what was happening and took a step back and made sure I slowed down.
I have to admit, it's hard sometimes. Fitting the creative bits into a full life can be quite a challenge especially when the only time you have spare is tainted with fatigue from a busy day at work. I want to be able to give my creative space the recognition it deserves but sometimes there's not enough cotton left on the spool. What can you do?
I guess that's where crochet fits in. It can be such an automatic task and can fit into the end of a long, tiring day very easily. I can sit and not concentrate the same way as I would have to if I was sewing a new garment and the like. That's why I love it so. Crochet is my friend. =P
It's a strange headspace I find myself in this week but I'm not too worried about it. These phases tend to be cyclical so things will no doubt be different next week.
Make sure you pop in and visit Kirsty and see what other's are up to in their spaces this week...

I'm really looking forward to seeing your finished piece!
oh this is looking better and better! I love! and i find it hard to squish in craftiness too. embroidery helps me there, it can be soothing and you can watch tv at the same time :)

Love to rush things too...But it's looking great!!! And I couldn't agree more with your opinion of Crochet :)
It's looking wonderful Melanie. I always make mistakes when I sew at night... my mind wanders or something. Good luck with finishing off! Kylie
I hear you Melanie - there is just never enough time. And time for resting and reflection is important too!
I'm looking forward to seeing your finished piece (and bummed I wasn't quick enough to get one!)
Its looking wonderful, I can't wait to see the whole piece. I am thrilled to hear you are crocheting again. Does that mean your thumb is better? I love how well it fits in to the madness of family life too (except when you need to count and they want to join in).
This looks so interesting. The two arm in arm from a few posts back are gorgeous. I can't wait to see the whole thing put together.
I'm just loving the peeks of your block *M. Looking forward to seeing the whole when it's done.
Love the sneak peek. I love your cotton spool analogy. Very true.
You're wise to recognise the cyclical factor when it comes to weird headspaces... and weird creative spaces too! I don't really have a process like crochet to fall back on when my other creative endeavours aren't working. I hope that embroidery becomes that for me... but so far I've just been making knotty messes on the things I've tried!
I just cant wait to see it...!!!
I feel the same way about knitting that you do about crochet. It's perfect for those days when you're only able to fit in a few moments of creativity. I love that my hands can work and my mind can wander wherever it wants to, without worrying I'm going to sew through my finger with my machine!
It is hard to fit stuff in when you arelady have a full dance card. It's nice to have those "pick up and put down" projects handy though, like crochet and handsewing.
Your block is looking so beautiful!
I can have days where I'm lucky to spend 5 minutes being creative, so I completely get the over-full squished up crafting feeling. It looks like your stolen moments are adding up to a special redwork square, though!
It certainly can. I have really enjoyed it all so far. Watch many a tv show that's for sure!
Thanks Amanda. It's hard keeping patient when you just want to see something finished
thanks Kylie
Thank Nycole.
My thumb is kind of better. I still have to wear the splint at night and whenever it hurts and I try to wear it when I crochet too. Its not swollen or sore like it was but it still triggers every now and again. Such a weird feeling!!!
Thanks Pippi. I can't wait to see it either. Sometimes the image that you have in your head and what you draw up doesn't end up as the final product. Execution and other factors often change things!!
Me too Kirsty. I am hanging out to have it finished. I just want to say "there, all done!" :)
Thanks Kelly, I was going to say 'petrol in the tank' but then thought better of it.
I definitely think embroidery can take the place of crochet. In fact, after I finish this square I think it will take on a bigger role in my creative space. I have really enjoyed learning as I go and it's such a lovely passtime
Thanks Leonie. I can't wait to show you either! :)
Thanks for commenting Teresa. Yes, the versatility of crochet, knitting and embroidery makes them an ideal passtime.
Thanks Michelle. It is nice to have those handy side projects to tuck into when your tired from all that dancing!
Thank you Dillpickle. I even have to steal moments to reply to all the lovely comments I get. I have a 3 yo asking me to do happy faces and the like the whole time I've sat here commenting! It can be so hard but it's cup half full, not empty!
:-D from Miss Ivy
Thanks Curlypops. I can't wait to show you!
It's coming along beautifully. You can see the love that's gone into it. Keep it up...and crochet a little too. I'm yet to grasp that skill as I too know what it's like with very little time to sew, and to crochet in front of the telly is what I want to do some nights.
This square is looking amazing Lady! Looking forward to seeing all the pieces of the jigsaw put together...
Your square is looking great - I can't wait to see the finished product. Good advice about slowing down too. Have a great week!
Oh wow! I so understand the rushing it at the end bit... I can be so careful up to a point and then utter impatience takes over. I do love this embroidery though, it really is beautiful.
I think my hand quilting is your crocheting... so simple and sooting for me!
Good luck on finishing! It looks so promising. I know what you mean about finding time to be creative in the busyness. Sometimes I have so little energy left, yet I NEED to do something non-mommy in order to recharge. Just part of life, I guess, eh? Looking forward to your finished block!
Hi, have stumbled across your blog and really love your work. This piece is looking gorgeous. Look forward to popping in :)
Your square is looking amazing Melanie. Now if you were late for the bus or in a 100m Sprint race, rushing at the end would be a great strategy so I don't think you should remove this technique from "your skills list"...! But it probably was good to slow down for your quilt square. I just thought I'd put a different spin on you maybe being too hard on yourself!
