getting serious...

Getting serious

It just didn't go away this time. The nagging pain in my thumb and wrist. It hung around and I hadn't crocheted for over a week. I had to do something and this is the result. A splint. A wee one with a red racing stripe just for my thumb. It appears that I have what is called a trigger thumb - chk chk.

The good news is it's not serious, no RSI, carpal tunnel, tenasynovitis or arthritis. I will still be able to crochet and through massage and stretching I should be able to alleviate the problem. The bad news is it's the type of condition that comes from aging (who thought I'd ever get old?) and over use and won't ever go away as such. It might even grow worse with time but if I am sensible and take care of myself it will be able to be managed.

So there you have it, a real crochet injury. When people ask me what's wrong with my thumb I'm telling them earnestly that it's a crochet injury and they laugh at me. I guess some people just don't take crochet seriously enough...what's with that?? = P

You're just a hardcore crocheter!  Maybe you could crochet a little thumb cover for yourself for the future?!  My index finger on my right hand is a little achey today, I joined two rows of my blanket together (crocheting) last night and think I overdid something - have an old netball injury in my finger so it's a bit sensitive anyway.  Who knew creativity could be so dangerous?!

Ouch. I totally understand. I've got a wrist thing and a sore, callous on my finger. My pilates teacher thinks its hysterical; in Melb she says it's all about computer related injuries and then she comes to Daylesford and has to deal with crochetitis, violin elbow, tractor hip....Hope yours gets better really soon. What are you doing with all your free time in the meantime?

crotchet injury is a real thing....I can only stitch my baskets and stuff for 3 weeks max before I have to have a break. People just don't see it as the labour of love that it is.

Oh no! Is it possible to crochet with a splint on your hooking thumb? I notice that intensive hooking gives me a sore right wrist and elbow and I need a break for a few days to help it feel better. Not that I hook intensively that often at the moment - mothering a babe means that only incidental crafting gets done unless we're on holidays and daddy's on duty! Hope it feels better soon...

Oh Noooooooooo! Just goes to show you are an elite crochet athlete in order to have sustained a REAL splint-wearing injury...(hate it when they throw in the age thing by way of explanation).

I'm actually knitting at the moment.  It doesn't use my thumb at all really and is a very good compromise

Not good news. Sorry about your thumb - this is actually a real shit. I don't like it when bad things come from good... not fair. K

Oh my! At least you know it's a bit manageable. Imagine the horror of no more crochet!

What a great blog you have. On the bright side trigger thumb does sound like the coolest injury you could possibly have, especially with the crochet back story. Hope it's on the improve!

Oh no! Poor thumb!! That's some serious crocheting you've been doing... I guess it's screaming out for a little bit of TLC. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Oh no!  No more crochet?  Heaven forbid! I must admit the thought had crossed my mind.  What if the physio said I couldn't do it any more??  Thank goodness she didn't!

Thanks Jenaveve.  It's amazing how much of a difference the splint has made.  It's like I have a new thumb

LOL - I get knitting injuries occasionally too. LOVE your blog - loved all the red  in your post about the quilt project.
And I WISH I would clean up my own craft area to photograph...maybe someday :)

OH - I got crochet wrists just before my second was born and now I have big baby wrists - I don't know which is worse! Must try the other hooks you recommende though...
