Sunday wisdom...

I pulled out this book for a bit of a read today and found myself in a fit of giggles...

Singer Sewing Book 1954
From Singer Sewing Book by Mary Brooks PickenSecond Edition 1954

So I have decided to share with you some of this book's 1954 wisdom.

For those of you that feel overwhelmed by the busy-ness of your lives you may appreciate reading the passages that I have selected for you today, on this particularly beautiful cold winter solstice afternoon.

To sew successfully one must prepare themselves mentally, physically and materially.  Here is some advice on how to be physically prepared for sewing...

To Sew Successfully
But one must also plan her sewing time...

To Sew Successfully...Plan for Sewing Time Part 2

So there you have it.  I hope that all of you give some serious thought to what you've just read.  If you don't don a clean dress and wear makeup when you sew, then perhaps you should seriously consider doing so - you wouldn't want your husband to come home and see you "not look neatly put together"!

Oh dear, I don't think I am neatly put together whenever I have visitors!

OH-MY-GOD! That is hysterical! Bugger the neighbours or your husband catching you by surprise without your lippy on, what about your "intimates" who might want to sew with you!? That is too good to be true! Thank you, thank you for sharing this wisdom with us.

What a crack up!
Luckily I don't have a husband to interrupt me when I'm sewing so I might be safe without the full dress and make up.
I usually wear trackies, moccassins and a hoodie to sew in!

Hehe, thanks for that...wisdom! I'll be sure to 'spruce up' from now on.

So great! Much better than the later paper version of have of one of these. Lipstick and Hair! Don't forget to look pretty my darlings! :D

Now I know why I don't get my work done.  I've been forgetting to "spruce up" before I start.  (And I spend massive quantities of time reading fabulous blogs like yours!)

Nor am I! Imagine having to worry about that too!

It was absolutely my pleasure!

And thank you! Such a lovely thing to say. It wouldn't be a fantastic blog without fantastic visitors

I can't imagine sewing in anything else! Imagine trying to sew all dressed up?

Just put some lippy on. I'm sure that would be enough!

It reminds me of Madmen. I can see them all trying to look exquisite sitting down to sew...

Aww thanks. Hmmm I wonder what advice they would give for blogging attire? Surely you would still have to look your best??

I don't think I do myself up that much when I leave the house! And I prefer to sew barefoot. What a mess I am!!!

Just stopped over to take a look at your blog. Welcome to the Fiber Focus Group!

Oh this made me feel so much better! See? I couldn't possibly be sewing in my non-made-up condition. And in these clothes? Tch-tch.

So simplistic and niaieve, but funnily enough a tiny element of truth in some of it (not the bit about needing to be all dolled up!!!). What a fabulous find M!!! And yes, very Mad Men-esque.

PS. I played Friday Faves last week, but not this week... but I will again NEXT week :)

There is a little bit of truth in it.  Whilst I don't dress up when I sew, I do understand the need to pose in the mirror.  You sometimes need to have the right clothes on for this but not always.

I will come and visit your Friday faves.  I haven't had time to cruise blogs this w/e - sob.  But I will make sure I drop by yours!
