As ridiculous as it may sound, there is in fact an opp shop in the city. I have walked past it hundreds of times over the past 7 years and have never once stepped foot in it. Some illogical brain spasm located somewhere near my hippocampus made me think it wouldn't be very good cos it's in the city or would naturally be overpriced or something because it's in Bourke St, Melbourne. Common thoughts were 'what op-shop in it's right mind would operate with CBD rents?', 'It'd have so many people going through there. There's no point in looking'. Ridiculously dumb huh?
But today thankfully something came over me when I walked past it at lunchtime. I had a spontaneous urge to enter and I discovered that I couldn't have been more wrong about this op-shop.
Look what I found...

A lovely print of a girl, a great vase, knick knacky bowls, a green sparkly top and some stripy socks.
I'm so excited. I now have an op-shop nearby...and after all this time...sigh.
The moral of the story is "Don't judge a book by it's cover" or more simply put, "don't be a dufus Melanie".

wow great finds, don't try to imagine what lovely thrifty finds you missed all those years, but well maybe that is better...
I love the bow and stripy socks...
Is the op shop the one down the stairs in the arcade off Bourke Street .... if it is I think the outlet upstairs with clothing is part of the same op shop.
I often take a wander down there (because I'm the breadwinner who works in the city too! coincidence).
Let us know if you get there as well as they have some great clothing ... although not generally cheap.
Oh wow! I love that bowl and that picture?! To die for! I see many more purchases from that there oppy in your future!
Great story - I do the same thing! I never go into the city oppies for the same reason... shall have to mend my ways. Great finds! Kx
You crack me up. I love the word dufus... such a classic!
No it's the Salvos on the top of Bourke street between Spring and Exhibition. I don't know about the one in the arcade...must find out more!
yay for new op shop finds! That print is lovely, as is the stripey socks! I'm considering an op-shop trip down to wollongong to find some good ones, i find Sydney city ones are overpriced and a bit rubbish. But then, you never know!
you are so right. i often choose an op shop because of its location thinking it will be good and it's rubbish and then the one you think will be overpriced will be gold. have fun thrifting
